- Light roast means the coffee is roasted to an earlier point, which leaves more of its origin character in the cup.
- Expect brighter, fruitier or floral flavours, and a more delicate body than darker roasts.
- A lighter roast is not a weaker coffee, because strength depends on how you brew it.
- We roast light to medium so each coffee tastes like where it comes from.
Light roast has a reputation for being sour or thin, and much of that comes from people hearing coffee described in technical words that make it sound harder than it is.
What light roast means
Every coffee begins as a green seed, and roasting develops its flavour. A light roast stops earlier, so the flavours that come from the farm, the altitude and the processing stay easy to taste, where a darker roast adds more of the flavour that comes from the roasting itself.
What it tastes like
Depending on the coffee you might notice orange, berries, honey or flowers. Our Colombia, Santuario Huila is a good example: it is fully washed, grown at 1,400 to 1,700 metres, and its cup profile of orange, brown sugar and sweetness comes through whether you brew it as espresso or pour it over. You can read more in our UAE launch post.
Is light roast weaker or more acidic?
Not necessarily. As we noted in Part 1, a darker roast can taste more intense without being stronger, and the strength of your cup depends mostly on dose and brewing method. Brightness is a flavour you can enjoy, and a coffee with some acidity often tastes fresh and juicy rather than sharp.
Brewing it well
Light roasts reward a little patience. If a cup tastes sour, a finer grind or a slightly longer brew often rounds it out, which is the same adjustment we described in Part 3.
Why we roast light to medium
Our coffees come from growing regions around the world, and we roast them in small batches at our roastery in Youghal, Co. Cork, in a way that lets each one show its own character. Every batch is roasted, tested and packed at its freshest, whether it ends up in a bag on your counter or in our cafés.
Frequently asked questions
Is light roast good for espresso? Yes, though it may take more experimenting with grind and extraction than a darker roast.
Does light roast have more caffeine? Caffeine depends on the coffee, the dose and the brew, so roast level alone does not decide it.
Which light roast should I start with? Pick a tasting note that sounds good to you, such as orange or brown sugar, and begin there.
